We’ve spotted it creeping into our office; have you? Oh it doesn’t matter just this once, what I do doesn’t make any real difference — eco-fatigue.

We all know we ought to be reducing our carbon footprint. We’ve seen the pictures of the melting polar ice caps and we understand the warnings about what climate change means for the future but global warming is such a vast and complex crisis it’s overwhelming, so many of us slip into learned helplessness in response. It’s just too big and we have no control; so what does it matter if we leave the lights on and print out our emails?

We need to watch out for sneaky eco-fatigue thoughts and stop them in their tracks. We need a battle plan:

  • Keep your focus small, but constructive.
Remind yourself what you can do in your everyday life and stick to it.

  • Make the little things into habits.
Consciously work at making the green way the way you do things without thinking.

  • Step up as a carbon champion.
Stop being so polite and challenge your colleagues to adopt the right habits too. Even nag a little.

Make keep calm and carry on your new green motto. All over the world people are making little changes that together will make a difference.

So keep on:

  • Recycling everything you can

  • Only printing when strictly necessary

  • Turning off what you can at the end of the day

  • Thinking about when you need the lights on, and when they can go off

  • Using heating and air con only when needed, and being conscious of the temperatures chosen

  • Choosing an agency who champions the greenest ways of getting the job done (sneaky plug for asabell there, but it is our newsletter)

And Rose, step away from the printer...
